جَرَحَتْinjuredأَشْوَاكُthe thornsالشُّجَيْرَاتِof the shrubsقَدَمَيْهِhis feetوَسَدَّتْand blockedفُرُوعُthe branchesالْأَشْجَارِof the treesالطَّرِيقَthe pathأَمَامَهُin front of him
The thorns of the shrubs injured his feet, and the branches of the trees blocked the path in front of him.
لَمْdid notيَسْتَطِعْhe manageالسَّيْرَto walkفِيinهُدُوءٍquietدَاخِلَinsideالْغَابَةِthe forest
He could not walk quietly inside the forest,
بَلْratherأَصْدَرَhe producedجَلَبَةًa noiseشَدِيدَةًloud
rather he produced a loud noise
حَتَّىuntilبَاتَhe becameخَائِفًاafraidمِنْofأَنْthatيَسْمَعَهُmight hear himالْآخَرُونَthe others
until he became afraid that the others might hear him.
ابْتَعَدَHe distanced himselfكَوَثِيرًاfarدَاخِلَinsideالْغَابَةِthe forestيَبْحَثُsearchingعَنْforمَكَانٍa placeمُظْلِمٍdarkيُمْكِنُهُhe canالْبَقَاءُstayingفِيهِin itوَحِيدًاalone
He distanced himself far inside the forest searching for a dark place where he could stay alone.
وبَعْدَAnd afterفَتْرَةٍa while
And after a while,
خَفَتَfaded awayصَوْتُthe soundإِطْلَاقِof firingالنِّيرَانِshots
the sound of firing faded away,
وَانْطَلَقَتْand startedأَصْوَاتُthe soundsالْمَدَافِعِof cannonsبَعِيدًاfar away
and the sounds of cannons started far away.
تَوَهَّجَتِShoneالشَّمْسُthe sunوَسْطَamongالْأَشْجَارِthe trees
The sun shone among the trees,
بَيْنَمَاwhileأَصْدَرَتِreleasedالْحَشَرَاتُthe insectsأَصْوَاتًاsoundsكَإِيقَاعِlike the rhythmالْمُوسِيقَىof music
while the insects released sounds like the rhythm of music.
لقدIndeedبَدَاit seemedوَكَأَنَّهَاas though itتَصِرُّwas gratingبِأَسْنَانِهَاwith its teethفِيinتَنَاغُمٍharmony
Indeed, it seemed as though it was grating with its teeth in harmony.
قَرَعَTappedنَقَّارُthe woodpeckerالْخَشَبِof the woodجَانِبَthe side ofإِحْدَىone ofالْأَشْجَارِthe trees
The woodpecker tapped the side of one of the trees,
وَمَرَّand passedطَائِرٌa birdفِيinالْهَوَاءِthe air
and a bird passed in the air.
بَعِيدًاFar awayكَانَwasطَنِينُthe buzzingالْمَوْتِof death
Far away was the buzzing of death,
أَمَّاas forهُنَاhereفَلَاnot a soundيَسْمَعُdoes he hearهنريHenryسِوَىexceptأَصْوَاتِthe voicesالطَّبِيعَةِof nature
but here Henry hears nothing but the voices of nature.
وَسْطَIn the middle ofهَذَاthisالْمَشْهَدِscene
In the middle of this scene,
شَعَرَfeltهنريHenryأَنْهُthat he wasأَفْضَلُin a betterحَالًاcondition
Henry felt that he was in a better condition.
كَانَHe wasيَشْعُرُfeelingبِالسَّكِينَةِtranquility
He was feeling tranquility.
سَقَطَFellكُوزُa podصَنَوْبَرٍof pineمِنْfromفَوْقِaboveشَجَرَةٍa tree
A pine pod fell from above a tree,
وَهَبَطَand droppedبِجِوَارِnearسِنْجَابٍa squirrelفَرَّthat fledبَعِيدًاfar away
and dropped near a squirrel that fled far away,
ورَأَىand sawهنريHenryأَنَّthatهَذَاthisهُوَisقَانُونُthe lawالطَّبِيعَةِof nature
and Henry saw that this is the law of nature.
لَقَدْIndeedأَدْرَكَrealizedالسِّنْجَابُthe squirrelأَنَّthatهُنَاكَthere isخَطَرًاa dangerيُحَدِّقُloomingبِهِat him
The squirrel realized that there was a looming danger;
فَهَرَبَso it fledبَعِيدًاfar away
so it fled far away.
تَوَغَّلَPenetratedهنريHenryفِيintoالْغَابَةِthe forest
Henry penetrated into the forest,
وَأَخِيرًاand finallyوَصَلَhe arrivedإِلَىatمَكَانٍa placeبَدَتْwhere appearedفِيهِin itالْأَغْصَانُthe branchesالْمُرْتَفِعَةُraisedالْمُقَوَّسَةُand curved
and finally arrived at a place where the raised and curved branches appeared
وَكَأَنَّهَاas if theyتُشَكِّلُformكَنِيسَةًa churchصَغِيرَةًsmall
as if they form a small church.
شَكَّلَتْFormedأَوْرَاقُthe leavesالصَّنَوْبَرِof the pineبِسَاطًاa carpetبُنِّيًّاbrown
The pine leaves formed a brown carpet,
وَكَانَand there wasهُنَاكَthereضَوْءٌa lightخَافِتٌdim
and there was a dim light.
تَوَقَّفَHe stoppedعِنْدَatالْمَدْخَلِthe entranceمَصْدُومًاshockedمِمَّاby whatرَآهُhe sawأَمَامَهُin front of him
He stopped at the entrance, shocked by what he saw in front of him.
كَانَThere wasأَمَامَهin front of himجُثَّةُthe corpseرَجُلٍof a manيَسْتَنِدُleaningبِظَهْرِهِwith his backإِلَىagainstإِحْدَىone ofالْأَشْجَارِthe trees
There was the corpse of a man leaning with his back against one of the trees.
كَانَWasالرَّجُلُthe manيَرْتَدِيwearingزِيًّاa garmentأَزْرَقَblueاللَّوْنِin color
The man was wearing a blue garment in the past,
فِيمَاas for whatمَضَىhas passed
as for what has passed,
لَكِنَّهُbut itالْآنَnowبَهَتَhas fadedحَتَّىuntilصَارَit becameدَرَجَةًa shadeكَئِيبَةًgloomyمِنَofاللَّوْنِthe colorالْأَخْضَرِgreen
but it now has faded until it became a gloomy shade of green.
تَغَيَّرَتْChangedعَيْنَاthe eyes ofالرَّجُلِthe manاللَّتَانِthatكَانَتَاwereتُحَدِّقَانِstaringفِيatهنريHenryإِلَىtoلَوْنٍa colorبَاهِتٍfadedمِثْلِlikeجَوَانِبِthe sides ofالسَّمَكَةِa fish
The eyes of the man that were staring at Henry changed to a faded color like the sides of a fish.
كَانَWasفَمُهُhis mouthمَفْتُوحًاopen
His mouth was open,
وَandتَغَيَّرَتْchangedشَفَتَاهُhis lipsاللَّتَانِthatكَانَتَاwereحَمْرَاوَيْنِredيَوْمًاone dayإِلَىtoلَوْنٍa colorأَصْفَرَyellowمُخِيفٍfrightening
and his lips, which were red one day, changed to a frightening yellow color.
كَانَWasالنَّمْلُthe antالصَّغِيرُsmallيَزْحَفُcreepingفَوْقَonبَشَرَةِthe skin ofالرَّجُلِthe manالْرَمَادِيَّةِgray
The small ant was creeping on the gray skin of the man,
وَandإِحْدَاهُنَّone of themتَحْمِلُis carryingكُتْلَةًa lumpمَاsomethingفَوْقَonشَفَتِهِhis lipالْعُلْيَاupper
and one of them is carrying something like a lump on his upper lip.
أَطْلَقَUtteredهنريHenryصَرْخَةًa screamعِنْدَمَاwhenرَأَىhe sawالْجُثَّةَthe corpse
Henry uttered a scream when he saw the corpse,
ولَمْand could notيَسْتَطِعِmanageالتَّحَرُّكَto moveأَوْorإِشَاحَةَavertنَظَرِهِhis gazeبَعِيدًاawayعَنِfromالرَّجُلِthe man
and could not move or avert his gaze away from the man.
بَدَاIt seemedوَكَأَنَّهُas if heتَحَوَّلَturnedإِلَىintoصَخْرَةٍa rockلِبِضْعِfor a fewدَقَائِقَminutes
It seemed as if he turned into a rock for a few minutes.
حَدَّقَHe staredفِيatعَيْنَيِthe eyes ofالرَّجُلِthe manالْغَرِيبِstranger
He stared at the eyes of the stranger,
وَبِبُطْءٍand slowlyوَضَعَhe placedإِحْدَىone ofيَدَيْهِhis handsخَلْفَهُbehind himوَأَسْنَدَهَاand leaned itعَلَىagainstإِحْدَىone ofالْأَشْجَارِthe trees
and slowly he placed one of his hands behind him and leaned it against one of the trees,
وَعَلَىand inوَضْعِهِpositionهَذَاthisأَخَذَhe beganيَرْجِعُto stepإِلَىtoالْخَلْفِthe backخُطْوَةًstepخُطْوَةًby step
and in this position he began to step back step by step,
وَهُوَwhile heلَاnotيَزَالُstillيَنْظُرُlookingإِلَىatالرَّجُلِthe man
while he was still looking at the man.
كَانَHe wasيَخْشَىafraidلَوِthat ifاسْتَدَارَhe turned aroundأَنْthatتَقْفِزَmight jumpالْجُثَّةُthe corpseوَتُطَارِدَهُand chase him
He was afraid that if he turned around, the corpse might jump and chase him.
