أَرَادَwantedهُنْرِيHenryأَنْtoيَصْرُخَshoutلَكِنَّهُbut heلَمْdid notيَسْتَطِعْbe ableأَنْtoيُصْدِرَemitأَيَّanyصَوْتٍsound
Henry wanted to shout, but he could not emit any sound.
وَقَفَstoppedالرَّجُلُthe manذُوwithالثِّيَابِthe clothesالرَّثَّةِtatteredوَرَاقَبَهُand watched him
The man with tattered clothes stopped and watched him.
قَالَsaidالرَّجُلُthe manبَعْدَafterبُرْهَةٍa while
The man said after a while:
انْظُرْLookيَاOرَفِيقِيmy companionلَقَدْindeedرَحَلَdepartedصَدِيقُكَyour friendأَلَيْسَis it notكَذَلِكَso
Look O my companion, indeed your friend has departed, is it not so?
مِنَfromالْأَفْضَلِthe bestلَكَfor youأَنْtoتَهْتَمَّcareبِنَفْسِكَfor yourself
It is better for you to care for yourself.
لَنْwill notيَكْتَرِثَcareأَحَدٌanyoneلِإِزْعَاجِto annoyصَدِيقِكَyour friendبَعْدَafterالْآنَnow
No one will care to annoy your friend after now.
وَعَلَيَّand upon meأَنْtoأَقُولَsayإِنَّنِيindeed Iلَاdo notأَتَمَتَّعُenjoyبِصِحَّةٍhealthجَيِّدَةٍgoodهَذِهِtheseالْأَيَّامَdays
And I must say that indeed I am not enjoying good health these days.
نَظَرَlookedهُنْرِيHenryإِلَىatالرَّجُلِthe manبِسُرْعَةٍquickly
Henry looked at the man quickly.
وَرَأَىand sawأَنَّهُthat heكَانَwasيَتَرَنَّحُstaggeringعَلَىonقَدَمَيْهِhis feet
And saw that he was staggering on his feet.
وَأَنَّand thatوَجْهَهُhis faceتَغَيَّرَchangedإِلَىtoلَوْنٍcolorأَزْرَقَblueغَرِيبٍstrange
And that his face had changed to a strange bluish color.
صَاحَshoutedهُنْرِيHenryلَسْتَyou are notأَنْتَyouأَيْضًاalsoلَنْwill notتَ...ا...
Henry shouted: "You are not, either, will not..."
لَوَّحَwavedالرَّجُلُthe manبِيَدِهِwith his hand
The man waved with his hand.
قَالَsaidالرَّجُلُthe manلَاno
The man said: no,
كُلُّallمَاthatأَحْتَاجُهُI needهُوَisحِسَاءُsoupالْبَازِلَّاءِof lentils

وَفِرَاشٌand beddingوَثِيرٌsoft
and soft bedding.
بَدَأَاThey startedيَسِيرَانِwalkingعَائِدَيْنِreturningإِلَىtoالطَّرِيقِthe road
They started walking back to the road.
تَحَرَّكَاThey movedبِهُدُوءٍcalmlyبَعْضَfor someالْوَقْتِtime
They moved calmly for some time,
وَأَخِيرًاand finallyقَالَsaidالرَّجُلُthe manرَثُّof tatteredالثِّيَابِclothes
and finally, the tattered-clothed man said:
أَتَعْلَمُDo you knowيَاOرَفِيقِيmy companion
“Do you know O my companion?
بَدَأْتُI beganأَشْعُرُto feelبِتَدَهْوُرٍwith a deteriorationشَدِيدٍsevere
I began to feel a severe deterioration.”
تَأَوَّهَsighedهُنْرِيHenryوَتَسَاءَلَand wonderedهَلْifسَيَشْهَدُhe will witnessعَرْضًاa performanceمُرَوِّعًاterrifyingآخَرَanother
Henry sighed and wondered if he would witness another terrifying performance,
لَكِنَّbutصَدِيقَهُhis friendالْجَدِيدَnewطَمْأَنَهُassured him
but his new friend assured him.
قَالَsaidالرَّجُلُthe manأُوهْOhلَمْhas notيَحِنِcomeالْوَقْتُthe timeبَعْدُyet
The man said: "Oh, the time has not come yet.
لَدَيَّI haveالْكَثِيرُmuchلَأَفْعَلَهُto do
I have much to do.
عَلَيْكَYou shouldأَنْtoتَرَىseeكَمْhow manyطِفْلٍchildلَدَيَّI have
You should see how many children I have!"
لَمَحَsawهُنْرِيHenryظِلَّa shadowابْتِسَامَةٍof a smileعَلَىonوَجْهِthe faceالرَّجُلِof the manالَّذِيwhoكَانَwasيَمْزَحُjoking
Henry saw a shadow of a smile on the face of the man who was joking.
سَارَاThey walkedمَسَافَةًa distanceأَطْوَلَlonger
They walked a longer distance,
وَتَحَدَّثَand talkedالرَّجُلُthe manذُوwithالثِّيَابِthe clothesالرَّثَّةِtatteredعَنْaboutمَسْقَطِthe birthplaceرَأْسِهِof his head
and the man in tattered clothes talked about his hometown,
بَعْدَهَاthenقَالَhe saidبِهُدُوءٍcalmlyبَالِغٍprofoundly
then he calmly said:
لَاI do notأَظُنُّthinkأَنِّيthat Iأَسْتَطِيعُcanمُوَاصَلَةَcontinueالسَّيْرِwalking
"I do not think I can continue walking,
وَأَنْتَand youأَيْضًاalsoتَبْدُوappearمُرْهَقًاexhaustedجِدًّاvery
and you also appear very exhausted,
أُرَاهِنُI betأَنَّكَthat youأَسْوَأُare worseحَالًاoffمِمَّاthan whatتَظُنُّyou think
I bet you are worse off than you think.
عَلَيْكَYou shouldالِاعْتِنَاءُcareبِجُرْحِكَfor your wound
You should take care of your wound;
لَيْسَit is notمِنَofالْجَيِّدِgoodأَنْtoتَتْرُكَleaveهَذِهِtheseالْجُرُوحَwoundsدُونَwithoutعِنَايَةٍcare
it is not good to leave these wounds without care.
أَيْنَWhereجُرْحُكَis your wound?

Henry said defiantly: "Stop bothering me."
الْخِزْيُThe shameالَّذِيthatكَانَhe wasيَشْعُرُfeelingبِهِaboutجَرَّاءَdue toمَاwhatفَعَلَهُhe did
The shame he was feeling about what he did
جَعَلَهُmade himيَصْرُخُscreamفِيinوَجْهِthe faceصَدِيقِهِof his friendالْوَحِيدِonlyالْآنَnow
made him scream in the face of his only friend now.
قَالَsaidالرَّجُلُthe manبِصَوْتٍin a voiceيَشُوبُهُmixed withالْحُزْنُsadness
The man said in a voice mixed with sadness:
يَعْلَمُknowsاللَّهُAllahأَنِّيthat Iلَاdo notأُرِيدُwantمُضَايَقَةَto inconvenienceأَحَدٍanyone
'Allah knows that I do not want to inconvenience anyone.
يَعْلَمُknowsاللَّهُAllahأَنَّthatلَدَيَّI haveمَاwhatيَكْفِيis enoughمِنَofالْقَلَقِanxiety'
Allah knows that I have enough of anxiety.'
تَحَدَّثَspokeهُنْرِيHenryالَّذِيwhoكَانَwasيُفَكِّرُthinkingوَيَرْمُقُand watchingالرَّجُلَthe manبِنَظْرَةِwith a lookكَرَاهِيَةٍof hatredبِنَبْرَةٍin a toneحَادَّةٍsharp
Henry — who was thinking and watching the man with a look of hatred — spoke in a sharp tone.
قَالَsaidهُنْرِيHenryإِلَىuntilاللِّقَاءِwe meet
Henry said: 'Until we meet.'
نَظَرَlookedالرَّجُلُthe manذُوwithالثِّيَابِthe clothesالرَّثَّةِtatteredإِلَيْهِat himفِيinذُهُولٍamazement
The man with tattered clothes looked at him in amazement.
سَأَلَهُHe asked himمُتَرَدِّدًاhesitantlyلِمَاذَاWhyيَاOصَدِيقِيmy friend
He asked him hesitantly: “Why? ... Why, my friend?
إِلَىtoأَيْنَwhereأَنْتَyouذَاهِبٌgoing?
Where are you going?”
بَدَاseemedرَأْسُهُHis headغَارِقًاimmersedفِيinالْأَفْكَارِthoughts
His head seemed immersed in thoughts.
