And after he moved away a distance, he turned and saw the man wandering in the midst of the field.

تَمَنَّىWishedهُنْرِيHenryلَوْifأَنَّهُthat heأُصِيبَwas injuredفِيinالْمَعْرَكَةِ.the battle.

Henry wished that he was injured in the battle.

السُّؤَالُThe simpleالْبَسِيطُquestionالَّذِيthatوَجَّهَهُdirectedالرَّجُلُthe manإِلَيْهِto himكَانَwasمِثْلَlikeالْجُرْحِ.a wound.

The thirteenth chapter

A second opportunity to join the battle

انْتَبَهَNoticedهُنْرِيHenryفَجْأَةًsuddenlyإِلَىthatأَنَّthe roarهَدِيرَof theالْمَعْرَكَةِbattleكَانَwasيَزْدَادُincreasingشَيْئًاlittleفَشَيْئًا.by little.

And when he arrived at the peak of one of the hills, he saw that the road had filled with carts

الَّتِيthatتَجُرُّهَاpulledالْخُيُولُthe horsesوَandبِالرِّجَالِ،with men.كَانَWasالْخَوْفُfearيُحَرِّكُmovingالْجَمِيعَ.everyone.

that the horses and men pulled. Fear was moving everyone.

شَعَرَFeltهُنْرِيHenryبِالرَّاحَةِat easeعِنْدَمَاwhenرَأَىhe sawهَذَاthisالْمَشْهَدَ.scene.

Henry felt at ease when he saw this scene.

كَانَEveryoneالْجَمِيعُwasيَفِرُّونَ،running away.رُبَّمَاPerhapsلَمْit was notيَكُنْbadسَيِّئًاto thisإِلَىextentهَذَاatالْحَدِّanyعَلَىrateأَيِّinحَالٍ.any case.

Everyone was running away. Perhaps it was not bad to this extent at any rate.

سُرْعَانَQuicklyمَاdidظَهَرَتْappearمَجْمُوعَةٌa groupمِنَofجُنُودِinfantryالْمُشَاةِsoldiersعَلَىonالطَّرِيقِ؛the road;

Quickly, a group of infantry soldiers appeared on the road;

كَانُواthey wereيَتَحَرَّكُونَmovingبِسُرْعَةٍquicklyوَيَدُورُونَand circlingحَوْلَaroundكُلِّeverythingمَاthatيُصَادِفُهُمْencountered themفِيinالطَّرِيقِ.the road.

they were moving quickly and circling around everything that encountered them in the road.

كَانَWereهَؤُلَاءِtheseالْجُنُودُsoldiersيَتَوَجَّهُونَheadingنَحْوَtowardقَلْبِthe heart ofالْمَعْرَكَةِthe battle,وَكَانُواand they wereعَلَىreadyاسْتِعْدَادٍto faceلِمُوَاجَهَةِthe chargeانْدِفَاعِof theالْعَدُوِّenthusiasticالْمُتَحَمِّسِ.enemy.

These soldiers were heading toward the heart of the battle, and they were ready to face the charge of the enthusiastic enemy.

اكْتَسَتْCoveredوُجُوهُهُمْtheir facesبِمَلَامِحِwith featuresالْجِدِّ،of seriousness,وَلَمَسَand feltهُنْرِيHenryشُعُورَهُمْtheir senseبِالْأَهَمِّيَّةِ.of importance.

Their faces were covered with features of seriousness, and Henry felt their sense of importance.

عِنْدَمَاWhenنَظَرَhe lookedإِلَيْهِمْ،at them,عَادَreturnedإِلَيْهِto himالشُّعُورُthe feelingبِالْحُزْنِ؛of sadness;

When he looked at them, the feeling of sadness returned to him;

he felt as if he was watching a line of soldiers, and the choice had fallen upon them especially to be heroes.
