لَنْwill notيَكُونَbeوَاحِدًاoneمِنْهُمْof themأَبَدًاever.

He will never be one of them.

كَانَIt wasمِنَfromالْمُمْكِنِpossibleأَنْtoيَبْكِيَcryفِيinتِلْكَthatاللَّحْظَةِmoment.

It was possible for him to cry at that moment.

تَمَنَّىwishedهُنْرِيHenryلَوِifاسْتَطَاعَhe couldأَنْtoيُصْبِحَbecomeبَطَلًاa hero,

Henry wished he could become a hero,

وَلِلَحْظَةٍand for a momentكَانَhe wasعَلَىonوَشْكِthe vergeالْقِيَامِof risingوَالِانْضِمَامِand joiningإِلَيْهِمْthemفِيinطَرِيقِهِمْtheir wayإِلَىtoالْمَعْرَكَةِthe battle,

and for a moment he was on the verge of rising and joining them in their way to the battle,

لَكِنَّbutالصُّعُوبَاتِthe difficultiesالْمُحِيطَةَsurroundingبِوَضْعِهِhis situationبَدَأَتْbeganتَثْنِيهِto deter himعَنْfromعَزْمِهِhis determination,

but the difficulties surrounding his situation began to deter him from his determination,

وَأَصَابَهُand he was struck byالتَّرَدُّدُhesitation.

and he was struck by hesitation.

لَمْHe didيَكُنْnotيَحْمِلُcarryبُنْدُقِيَّةًa gun,

He did not carry a gun,

لَكِنَّbutهُنَاكَthere areالْكَثِيرَmanyمِنَofالْبَنَادِقِthe gunsحَوْلَهُaround him,

but there are many guns around him,

وَandيُمْكِنُهُhe canالْتِقَاطُpick upإِحْدَىoneهَاof them.

and he can pick one up.

فَكَّرَHe thoughtأَيْضًاalsoأَنَّهُthat heسَيَكُونُwill beمِنَofالصَّعْبِthe difficultعَلَيْهِfor himالْعُثُورُfindingعَلَىonكَتِيبَتِهِhis companyمَرَّةًonceأُخْرَىmore,

He also thought that it would be difficult for him to find his company once more,

لَكِنَّهُbut heمَعَwithذَلِكَthatيَسْتَطِيعُis ableالْقِتَالَto fightمَعَwithأَيِّanyكَتِيبَةٍcompanyأُخْرَىَother.

but he can still fight with any other company.

بَدَأَBeganهنريHenryيَتَحَرَّكُto moveإِلَىtoالْأَمَامِthe frontرُوَيْدًاslowlyرُوَيْدًاslowly,يُقَاوِمُresistingمَخَاوِفَهُhis fears.

Henry started to move forward slowly, slowly, resisting his fears.

وَفِيAnd inالنِّهَايَةِthe endتَغَلَّبَتِovercameاعْتِرَاضَاتُobjectionsهنريHenryعَلَىonشَجَاعَتِهِhis courage.

And in the end, Henry's objections overcame his courage.

لَمْHe wasيَكُنْnotمُنْزَعِجًاagitatedلِلْغَايَةِextremelyمِنْfromقَرَارِهِhis decision.

He was not extremely agitated by his decision.

فَعِنْدَمَاSo whenفَكَّرَhe thoughtفِيهِabout it,رَأَىhe sawأَنَّthatالْمُشْكِلَاتِthe problemsالَّتِيwhichيُوَاجِهُهَاhe facesعَوِيصَةٌare difficultحَقًّاindeed,

So when he thought about it, he saw that the problems he was facing were indeed difficult;

وَandالْآنَnowوَفَوْقَand aboveكُلِّallشَيْءٍthings,بَدَأَتْbeganمُشْكِلَاتٌproblemsأُخْرَىotherتُثِيرُto raiseانْزِعَاجَهُhis annoyance.

and now, above all things, other problems began to raise his annoyance.

كَانَHe wasيُعَانِيsufferingظَمَأًfrom thirstشَدِيدًاsevere.

He was suffering from severe thirst.

كَانَWasوَجْهُهُhis faceجَافًّاdryحَتَّىuntilإِنَّهُheشَعَرَfeltوَكَأَنَّas ifبَشَرَتَهُhis skinسَتَتَشَقَّقُwould crack.

His face was dry until he felt as if his skin would crack.

كُلُّEveryعَظْمَةٍboneفِيinجَسَدِهِhis bodyكَانَتْwasتُؤْلِمُهُpaining him,

Every bone in his body was paining him,

وَقَدَمَاهُand his feetكَانَتَاwereمُتَقَرِّحَتَيْنِulcerated.

and his feet were ulcerated.

آلَمَتْهُPained himمَعِدَتُهُhis stomachمِنْfromشِدَّةِintensityالْجُوعِof hunger,

His stomach ached from the intensity of hunger,

وَأَصْبَحَand he becameلَاnotيَسْتَطِيعُableالرُّؤْيَةَto seeبِوُضُوحٍclearly.

and he was no longer able to see clearly.

أَدْرَكَRealizedهنريHenryأَنَّهُthat heلَنْwillيَكُونَbeبَطَلًاa heroأَبَدًاever.

Henry realized that he would never be a hero.

تَأَوَّهَHe groanedمِنْfromفَرْطِexcessالْحُزْنِof sorrowوَهَامَand wanderedعَلَىonوَجْهِهِhis faceبَعِيدًاfar away.

He groaned from excess of sorrow and wandered aimlessly far away.

ظَلَّRemainedهنريHenryقَرِيبًاnearمِنْfromمَيْدَانِfieldالْمَعْرَكَةِof the battle.

Henry remained near the battlefield.

كَانَتْWasلَدَيْهِwith himرَغْبَةٌa desireكَبِيرَةٌgreatفِيinرُؤْيَةِseeingالْقِتَالِthe fightingوَاسْتِطْلَاعِand reconnoiteringالْأَخْبَارِthe news.

He had a great desire to see the fighting and gather intelligence.

كَانَHe wasيُرِيدُwantingأَنْtoيَعْلَمَknowلِمَنْfor whomسَيَكُونُwill beالنَّصْرُthe victory.

He wanted to know for whom the victory would be.

فَكَّرَThoughtهنريHenryأَنَّهُthat heفِيinحَالَةِcaseهَزِيمَةِof defeatجَيْشِهِof his army,سَيَصُبُّwill pourذَلِكَthatفِيinمَصْلَحَتِهِhis interest.

Henry thought that in the case of his army's defeat, that would be in his interest.

لَقَدْIndeedظَنَّhe thoughtأَنَّthatالْعَدِيدَmanyمِنَofالرِّجَالِthe menالشُّجْعَانِbraveسَيَلُوذُونَwill take refugeبِالْفِرَارِin fleeingإِذَاifمَاwhatدَحَرَهُمُdefeats themالْعَدُوُّthe enemy,

He thought that many of the brave men would take refuge in fleeing if the enemy defeated them,

وَحِينَهَاand thenسَيَكُونُhe will beوَاحِدًاoneمِنْofهَؤُلَاءِtheseالرِّجَالِmen,وَلَنْand notيَعْرِفَwill knowأَحَدٌanyoneأَنَّهُthat heقَدْhasلَاذَtaken refugeبِالْفِرَارِin fleeingقَبْلَbeforeذَلِكَthat.

and then he would be one of these men, and no one would know that he had previously taken refuge by fleeing.

إِذَاIfخَسِرَlosesجَيْشُهُhis armyالْحَرْبَthe war,فَسَيَكُونُthen it will beهَذَاthisدَلِيلًاa proofعَلَىthatأَنَّهُheقَدْhasفَعَلَdoneالصَّوَابَthe right thingبِهَرَبِهِwith his escape.

If his army loses the war, then it will be a proof that he has done the right thing by escaping.

سَيُثْبِتُWill proveذَلِكَthatأَنَّهُheكَانَwasقَادِرًاcapableعَلَىofاسْتِشْرَافِforeseeingمَاwhatسَيَحْدُثُwill happen,

This will prove that he was capable of foreseeing what will happen,

وَكَأَنَّهُand as if heيَسْتَطِيعُcanالتَّنَبُّؤَpredictبِالْمُسْتَقْبَلِthe future.

and as if he can predict the future.

كَانَWasلِهَذَاfor thisالدَّلِيلِevidenceأَهَمِّيَّةٌimportanceكُبْرَىgreatلَدَىtoهنريHenry,

This evidence was of great importance to Henry;

لَأَنَّهُbecause heلَمْdid notيَقْبَلْacceptفِكْرَةَthe ideaأَنَّهُthat heقَدْhadفَعَلَdoneشَيْئًاsomethingمُشِينًاshameful.

because he did not accept the idea that he had done something shameful.

أَمَّاAs forإِذَاifانْتَصَرَwinsالْجَيْشُthe army,فَسَيَقَعُthen will fallهنريHenryفِيinمَأْزِقٍtrouble.

As for if the army wins, then Henry will be in trouble.

كَانَHe wasيُدْرِكُrealizingأَنَّthatالتَّفْكِيرَthinkingفِيinأُمُورٍmattersكَهَذِهِlike thisأَمْرٌis a matterبَغِيضٌdetestable,

He realized that thinking about matters like these is a detestable affair,

وَandنَعَتَhe describedنَفْسَهُhimselfبِالْوَغْدِas a scoundrelلِمُجَرَّدِfor merelyالتَّفْكِيرِthinkingفِيinذَلِكَthat.

and he described himself as a scoundrel for merely thinking about that.
