عِنْدَWhenحُلُولِthe arrival ofالظَّلَامِ،darkness,انْقَسَمَwas dividedرَتَلُthe ranksالْجُنُودِof the soldiersإِلَىintoوَحَدَاتٍ،units,وَدَخَلَتْand enteredكُلُّeachوَحْدَةٍunitإِلَىintoالْحُقُولِthe fieldsكَيْtoتُخَيِّمَ.camp.

When the arrival of darkness, the ranks of the soldiers was divided into units, and each unit entered into the fields to camp.

بَدَتِIt seemedالْخِيَامُthe tentsوَكَأنَّهَاas if they wereنَبَاتَاتٌplantsغَرِيبَةٌ،strange,وَرَصَّعَتْand adornedنِيرَانُthe firesالْمُخَيَّمِof the campصَفْحَةَthe pageاللَّيْلِof the nightكَأَنَّهَاas if it wereزُهُورٌflowersحَمْرَاءُ.red.

The tents seemed as if they were strange plants, and the fires of the camp adorned the page of the night as if they were red flowers.

The third chapter

حِوَارٌDialogueمَعَwithصَدِيقٍa friend

Dialogue with a friend

سَارَwentهِنْرِيHenryبِمُفْرَدِهِaloneفِيinالظَّلَامِ.the darkness.

Henry went alone in the darkness.

اسْتَلْقَىHe layفَوْقَuponالْحَشَائِشِthe grassوَشَعَرَand feltبِالْأَسَىthe sorrowعَلَىonحَالِهِ.his condition.

He lay upon the grass and felt the sorrow on his condition.

كَانَHe wasيَتَمَنَّىwishingالْعَوْدَةَthe returnإِلَىtoمَنْزِلِهِhis homeمَرَّةًa timeأُخْرَىother

He was wishing the return to his home another time

وَالْقِيَامَand performingبِجَوْلَاتِهِhis roundsمِنَfromالْبَيْتِthe houseإِلَىtoالْحَظِيرَةِthe barn

and performing his rounds from the house to the barn

وَمِنَand fromالْحَظِيرَةِthe barnإِلَىtoالْحَقْلِthe field

and from the barn to the field

وَمِنَand fromالْحَقْلِthe fieldإِلَىtoالْحَظِيرَةِthe barn

and from the field to the barn

وَمِنَand fromالْحَظِيرَةِthe barnإِلَىtoالْبَيْتِ.the house.

and from the barn to the house.

تَذَكَّرَHe rememberedهِنْرِيHenryكَمhowكَانَhe wasيَصِيحُyellingفِيatالْبَقَرَةِthe cowوَرِفَاقِهَا،and her companions,لَكِنَّهُbut heالْآنَnowيُفَكِّرُthinksفِيهَاabout itفِيinسَعَادَةٍ.happiness.

Henry remembered how he was yelling at the cow and her companions, but he now thinks about it in happiness.

أَخْبَرَHe toldنَفْسَهُhimselfأَنَّهُthat heلَمْdid notيُخْلَقْget createdلِيَكُونَto beجُنْدِيًّا،a soldier,وَفَكَّرَand thoughtكَمhowهُوَheشَدِيدُstronglyالِاخْتِلَافِdifferentعَنِfromالرِّجَالِthe menالْآخَرِينَothersفِيinفِرْقَتِهِ.his company.

He told himself that he did not get created to be a soldier, and thought how he is strongly different from the men others in his company.

سَمِعَHe heardهِنْرِيHenryحَفِيفَthe rustle ofالْحَشَائِشِthe grassوَنَظَرَand lookedحَوْلَهُ،around him,فَرَأَىso he sawالْجُنْدِيَّthe soldierذَاpossessingالصَّوْتِthe voiceالْعَالِي،loud,فَنَادَاهُ:so he called him:«وِلْسُونُ!»‘Wilson!’

Henry heard the rustle of the grass and looked around him, so he saw the soldier possessing the loud voice, so he called him: ‘Wilson!’

قَالَSaidوِلْسُونُ:Wilson:«مَرْحَبًاHelloيَاOهِنْرِي،Henry,أَهَذَاis thisأَنْتَ؟you?مَاWhatالَّذِيthatتَفْعَلُهُyou are doingهُنَا؟»here?»

Said Wilson: «Hello O Henry, is this you? What that you are doing here?»

قَالَSaidهِنْرِي:Henry:«أُفَكِّرُ.»‘I am thinking.’

Said Henry: ‘I am thinking.’

بَدَأَHe startedوِلْسُونُWilsonفِيinالْحَدِيثِthe talkعَنِaboutالْمَعْرَكَةِthe battleالَّتِيwhichيَظُنُّhe thinksأَنَّهُمْthat theyسَيُشَارِكُونَwill participateفِيهَاin itقَرِيبًا.soon.

Wilson started in the talk about the battle which he thinks that they will participate in it soon.

قَالَSaidوِلْسُونُ:Wilson:«سَنَنَالُ“We will getمِنْهُمُfrom themالْآنَ!now!أَخِيرًاFinallyسَنَنَالُwe will getمِنْهُمْ.»from them.”

Said Wilson: “We will get from them now! Finally we will get from them.”

قَالَSaidهِنْرِي:Henry:«نَعَمْ،“Yes,يَقُولُsaysجِيمْJimكُونْكِلْنْConklinإِنَّنَاthat weسَنَخُوضُwill engageالْكَثِيرَthe a lotمِنَofالْقِتَالِ.»the fighting.”

Said Henry: “Yes, Jim Conklin says that we will engage the a lot of the fighting.”

قَالَSaidوِلْسُونُ:Wilson:«أَظُنُّهُ“I think himعَلَىuponحَقٍّtruthهَذِهِthisالْمَرَّةَ؛time;فَأَمَامَنَاso in front of usمَعْرَكَةٌa battleكَبِيرَةٌ،big,هَذَاthisأَمْرٌmatterمُؤَكَّدٌ.»confirmed.”

Said Wilson: “I think him upon truth this time; so in front of us a battle big, this matter confirmed.”

قَالَSaidهِنْرِي:Henry:«أَظُنُّكَ“I think youسَتُبْلِيwill performبَلَاءًperformanceحَسَنًا.»good.”

Said Henry: “I think you will perform performance good.”

رَدَّRepliedوِلْسُونُ:Wilson:«لَا“Noأَعْلَمُ،I know,أَعْتَقِدُI believeأَنَّنِيthat Iسَأَفْعَلُwill doمِثْلَمَاlikeيَفْعَلُdoالْبَاقُونَ،the remaining ones,سَوْفَwillأَبْذُلُI exertقُصَارَىthe utmost ofجُهْدِي.»my effort.”

Replied Wilson: “No I know, I believe that I will do like do the remaining ones, will I exert the utmost of my effort.”

سَأَلَهُAsked himهِنْرِي:Henry:«كَيْفَ“Howتَعْرِفُdo you knowأَنَّكَthat youلَنْwill notتَفِرَّfleeحِينَماwhenيَحِينُarrivesوَقْتُtime ofالْقِتَالِ؟»the battle?»

Asked him Henry: “How do you know that you will not flee when arrives time of the battle?»

قَالَSaidوِلْسُونُ:Wilson:«أَفِرُّ؟!»‘Flee?!’ثُمَّThenضَحِكَ،he laughed,وَأَضَافَ:and added:«أَفِرُّ؟!‘Flee?!بِالطَّبْعِBy natureلَنْwill notأَفِرَّ!»I flee!’

Said Wilson: ‘Flee?!’ Then he laughed, and added: ‘Flee?! By nature will not I flee!’

قَالَSaidهِنْرِي:Henry:«حَسَنًا،“Okay,ظَنَّthoughtالْكَثِيرُthe manyمِنَofالرِّجَالِthe menأَنَّهُمْthat theyسَيُحَقِّقُونَwill achieveانْتِصَارَاتٍvictoriesعَظِيمَةًgreatقَبْلَbeforeالْمَعْرَكَةِ،the battle,لَكِنْbutعِنْدَمَاwhenحَانَarrivedالْوَقْتُthe timeفَرُّوا.»they fled.”

Said Henry: “Okay, thought the many of the men that they will achieve victories great before the battle, but when arrived the time they fled.”

قَالَSaidوِلْسُونُ:Wilson:«هَذَا“Thisصَحِيحٌtrueعَلَىuponمَاwhatأَعْتَقِدُ،I believe,لَكِنِّيbut Iلَنْwill notأَفْعَلَdoذَلِكَ،that,وَمَنْand whoeverيُرَاهِنْbetsعَلَىonفِرَارِيmy fleeingفَسَوْفَthenيَخْسَرُ.»will lose.”

Said Wilson: “This true upon what I believe, but I will not do that, and whoever bets on my fleeing then will lose.”

قَالَSaidهِنْرِي:Henry:«سُحْقًا!“Shame!هَلْIsأَنْتَyouأَشْجَعُthe bravestرَجُلٍmanفِيinالْعَالَمِ؟»the world?»

Said Henry: “Shame! Is you the bravest man in the world?»

رَدَّRepliedوِلْسُونُ:Wilson:«لَا،“No,لَسْتُI am notكَذَلِكَ،like that,وَلَمْand did notأَقُلْI sayإِنَّنِيthat Iالْأَشْجَعُ.the bravest.

Replied Wilson: “No, I am not like that, and did not I say that I the bravest.

قُلْتُI saidإِنَّنِيthat Iسَآخُذُwill takeنَصِيبِيmy shareمِنَfromالْقِتَالِ،the fight,وَandمَنْwhoتَكُونُareأَنْتَyouلِتُخَاطِبَنِيto address meهَكَذَاlike thisعَلَىonأَيَّةِanyحَالٍ؟»condition?»

I said that I will take my share from the fight, and who are you to address me like this on any condition?»

حَدَّقَStaredوِلْسُونُWilsonفِيinوَجْهِface ofهِنْرِيHenryلَحْظَةًa momentثُمَّthenسَارَwalkedبَعِيدًا،away,فَصَاحَso shoutedهِنْرِي:Henry:لَاNoدَاعِيَneedلِأَنْfor thatيُغْضِبَكَit makes you angryالْأَمْرُ!the matter!

Stared Wilson in face of Henry a moment then walked away, so shouted Henry: No need for that it makes you angry the matter!

شَعَرَHe feltهِنْرِيHenryبِالْوَحْدَةِwith lonelinessوَالتَّعَاسَةِ.and sadness.

He felt Henry with loneliness and sadness.
