swearing by other than god and praying at graves ibn taymiyyah

فَصْلٌChapter

فَأَمَّاAs forدُعَاءُsupplicatingغَيْرِother thanاللَّهِAllahتَعَالَىthe Most High

أَوْorالِاسْتِغَاثَةُseeking aidبِغَيْرِfrom other thanاللَّهِAllah

فَلَاthen it is notيَجُوزُ،permissible,

وَإِنْeven ifجَازَit is permissibleأَنْthatيَتَوَسَّلَa person seeks nearnessالْإِنْسَانُmanبِرَسُولِby means of the Messenger ofاللَّهِAllahصَلَّىmay Allah sendاللَّهُblessingsعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ؛and grant him peace;

[أَيْ[meaningفِيinحَالِthe state ofحَيَاتِهِhis lifeلَاnotبَعْدَafterمَوْتِهِhis death

-وَلِهَذَا-and for this reasonلَمْdid notيَرِدْcome down/be reportedعَنِfromالسَّلَفِthe predecessorsأَنَّهُمْthat theyتَوَسَّلُواsought nearnessبِهِby means of himبَعْدَafterمَوْتِهِ-،his death-,

مِثْلُ]like](١)(1)أَنْthatيَقُولَ:he says:

(اللَّهُمَّ(O Allah,إِنِّيverily Iأَسْأَلُكَask Youوَأَتَوَسَّلُand seek nearnessإِلَيْكَto Youبِنَبِيِّby means of the Prophet ofالرَّحْمَةِ،Mercy,

يَاOمُحَمَّدُMuhammadيَاOرَسُولَMessenger ofاللَّهِAllahإِنِّيverily Iأَتَوَسَّلُseek nearnessبِكَby means of youإِلَىtoرَبِّيmy Lordفِيconcerningحَاجَتِيmy needلِيَقْضِيَهَاthat He may fulfill itلِي،for me,

اللَّهُمَّO Allahشَفِّعْهُmake him an intercessorفَيَّ).concerning me).

[عَلَى[Basedحَدِيثِupon the hadith ofالْأَعْمَى،the blind man,لَوْifصَحَّit is authentic(٢)](2)]

وَلَاAnd it is notيَجُوزُpermissibleأَنْthatيَقُولَ:he says:

يَاOرَسُولَMessenger ofاللَّهِAllahاغْفِرْforgiveلِي،me,

وَلَاand do notارْحَمْنِي،have mercy on me,

وَلَاand do notتُبْturnعَلَيَّ،in repentance toward me,

وَلَاand do notأَعِنِّي،aid me,

وَلَاand do notانْصُرْنِي،grant me victory,

وَلَاand do notأَغِثْنِي،rescue me,

[وَلَا[and do notافْتَحْopenعَيْنِيmy eyeمِنَfromالْعَمَىblindnessلِأُبْصِرَso that I may seeبِهِمَا].with them].

وَلَاAnd it is notيَجُوزُpermissibleأَنْthatيُدْعَىanyone be supplicated toإِلَّاexceptاللَّهُAllah[وَحْدَهُ]،[alone],

وَلَاand no oneيُعْبَدَis worshippedإِلَّاexceptاللَّهُAllahوَحْدَهُalone[لَا[noشَرِيكَpartnerلَهُ].is to Him].

قَالَSaidاللَّهُAllahتَعَالَى:the Most High:

{وَأَنَّ{And thatالْمَسَاجِدَthe mosquesلِلَّهِbelong to Allahفَلَاso do notتَدْعُواsupplicateمَعَalong withاللَّهِAllahأَحَدًا}anyone}[الْجِنِّ:[Al-Jinn:١٨]18]
