أَوْOrيَبْدُوit appears

فِيinظَاهِرِthe outward appearance ofالْأَمْرِthe matter

تَنَاقُضٌa contradictionوَتَعَارُضٌand an oppositionفِيinمَفْهُومِthe concept ofالْآيَةِthe verse.
a contradiction and opposition in the concept of the verse.
أَوْOrيَصْعُبُit is difficultفَهْمُto understandمَدْلُولِthe indication ofالْآيَةِthe verse
Or it is difficult to understand the indication of the verse
عَلَىforذِهْنِthe mind ofالْمُبْتَدِئِthe beginner.
for the mind of the beginner.
أَوْOrلَاdoes notتَتَمَكَّنُsettleمِنْinذِهْنِهِhis mind
Or there does not settle in his mind
فَائِدَةٌa benefitقَيْدَby anyالْقُيُودِmeans.
a benefit by any means.
فَإِذَاSo ifقَامَundertakesالْمُفَسِّرُthe exegeteبِحَلِّto solveهَذِهِtheseالْإِشْكَالاتِissues
So if the exegete undertakes to solve these issues
اعْتُبِرَit is consideredذَلِكَthatتَوْجِيهاً"directing/orientation".
it is considered that "directing".
أَمْثِلَةٌExamplesلِلتَّوْجِيهِfor directing:
Examples for directing:
مِثَالُAn exampleذَلِكَof thatقَوْلُis the sayingتَعَالَىof the Most High
An example of that is the saying of the Most High
عَلَىuponلِسَانِthe tongue ofبَنِيthe Children ofإِسْرَائِيلَIsrael:
upon the tongue of the Children of Israel:
يَاOأُخْتَsister ofهَارُونَAaron,مَاwas notكَانَyourأَبُوكِfatherامْرَأَa man ofسَوْءٍevil
"O sister of Aaron, your father was not a man of evil
إِلَخِetc.الْآيَةِthe verse.
etc. the verse.
فَقَدْFor indeedوَرَدَthere occurredهُنَاhereسُؤَالٌa question,
For indeed there occurred here a question,
وَهُوَand it isأَنَّthatالْمُدَّةَthe periodبَيْنَbetweenمُوسَىMosesوَعِيسَىand Jesus
and it is that the period between Moses and Jesus
عَلَيْهِمَاupon both of themالسَّلَامُbe peace,
upon both of them be peace,
مُدَّةٌis a periodطَوِيلَةٌlong.
is a long period.
فَكَيْفَSo howأَمْكَنَwas it possibleأَنْthatيَكُونَwould beهَارُونُAaronأَخاًa brotherلِمَرْيَمَto Mary?
So how was it possible that Aaron would be a brother to Mary?
كَأَنَّIt is as ifالسَّائِلَthe questionerكَانَwasقَدْalreadyأَضْمَرَharboredفِيinنَفْسِهِhimself
It is as if the questioner was already harboring in himself
أَنَّthatهَارُونَAaronهَذَاthis oneالَّذِيwhoذُكِرَwas mentionedهُنَاhere
that this Aaron who was mentioned here
هُوَisهَارُونُAaronأَخُوthe brother ofمُوسَىMoses
is Aaron the brother of Moses
عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُbe peace.
upon him be peace.
فَأَجَابَSo answeredالنَّبِيُّthe Prophet
So answered the Prophet
صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُof Godعَلَيْهِbe upon himوَسَلَّمَand blessings
may peace and blessings of God be upon him
بِأَنَّby [explaining] thatبَنِيthe Children ofإِسْرَائِيلَIsrael
that the Children of Israel
كَانُواused toيَسَمَّوْنَname [their children]بِأَسْمَاءِby the names ofالصَّالِحِينَthe righteousمِنَfromالْمَاضِينَthe predecessors
used to name [their children] by the names of the righteous from the predecessors
فَهَارُونُso Aaronلَيْسَis notشَخْصاًa single personوَاحِداًone,
(so Aaron is not a single person,
بَلْratherهَارُونُAaronأَخُوthe brother ofمَرْيَمَMary
rather Aaron the brother of Mary
غَيْرُis other thanهَارُونَAaronأَخِيthe brother ofمُوسَىMoses
is other than Aaron the brother of Moses
عَلَيْهِمَاupon both of themالسَّلَامُbe peace.
upon both of them be peace).
وَكَذَلِكَAnd likewiseلَمَّاwhenسَأَلُواthey askedرَسُولَthe Messenger ofاللَّهِGod
And likewise when they asked the Messenger of God
صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُof Godعَلَيْهِbe upon himوَسَلَّمَand blessings
may peace and blessings of God be upon him
كَيْفَHowيَمْشِيdoes walk
