وَإِمَّاAnd eitherأَنْthatيَعْلُوone dominatesأَحَدُهُمَاone of themعَلَىoverالآخَرِ؛the other;فَالْعَالِيthen the high (one)هُوَisالإِلَٰهُ.the God.
And either one dominates the other; then the high one is the God.
فَتَرْجِعُThen it returnsالْمَسْأَلَةُthe questionإِلَىtoأَنَّهُthat it isلَا بُدَّa mustأَنْ يَكُونَthat there isلِلْعَالَمِfor the universeإِلَٰهٌa Godواحِدٌ،one,وَلَاand noيُمْكِنُcanأَنْ يَكُونَbeلِلْعَالَمِfor the universeإِلَهَانِtwo Godsأَبَدًاeverلِأَنَّbecauseالْقَضِيَّةَthe issueلَاdoes notتَخْرُجُcome outمِنْfromهَذَيْنِthese twoالِاحْتِمَالَيْنِ.possibilities.
Then it returns to the fact that there must be one God for the universe, and it can never be that there are two Gods for the universe because the issue does not come out of these two possibilities.
كَمَاAsأَنَّنَاweأَيْضًاalsoإِذَاifشَاهَدْنَاwe observedالْكَوْنَthe universeعُلُوَّهُits heightsوَسُفْلِهِ؛and its lows;وَجَدْنَاwe foundأَنَّهُthat it isكَوْنٌa universeيَصْدُرُissuesعَنْfromمُدَبِّرٍa plannerواحِدٍoneوَإِلَّاOtherwiseلَكَانَthere would beفِيْهِin itتَنَاقُضٍ؛contradiction;فَأَحَدُFor one of theالْإِلَهَيْنِtwo Godsيَقُولُsaysمَثَلًا:for example:أَنَاIأُرِيدُwantالشَّمْسَthe sunتَخْرُجَto riseمِنَfromالْمَغْرِبِ!the west!
As we also observed the universe in its heights and lows; we found that it is a universe that issues from one planner, otherwise there would be a contradiction; for one of the Gods says for example: I want the sun to rise from the west!
وَالثَّانِيand the secondيَقُولُ:says:أُريدُهَاI want itتَطْلَعَto riseمِنَfromالْمَشْرِقِthe eastوَاتِّفَاقُAnd the agreementالإِرَادَتَيْنِof the two willsبَعِيدٌis farجِدًّا،very,وَلَاand there is notسِيَمَاespeciallyأَنَّthatالْمَقَامَthe situationمَقَامٌis the place ofسُلْطَةٍ؛authority;فَكُلٌّSo everyoneواحِدٌoneيُرِيدُwantsأَنْtoيَفْرِضَimposeرَأْيَهُ!his opinion!
And the second says: I want it to rise from the East and the agreement of the two wills is very far, especially since the position is one of authority; so everyone wants to impose his opinion!
وَمَعْلُومٌAnd it is knownأَنَّنَاthat weلَاdo notنُشَاهِدُobserveالآنnowالشَّمْسَthe sunتَطْلَعُrisesيَوْمًاsome daysمَعَwithهَذَاthisوَيَوْمًاand on some daysمَعَwithهَذَا،this,أوorيَوْمًاone dayتَتَأَخَّرُdelaysلِأَنَّbecauseالثَّانِيthe secondمَنَعَهَاprevents itيَوْمًاone dayتَتَقَدَّمُadvancesلِأَنَّbecauseالأَوَّلَthe firstأَمَرَcommandedالثَّانِيthe secondبِإِخْرَاجِهَا؛to bring it out;فَلَاSo there is notنَجِدُwe findهَذَاthisنَجِدُwe findالْكَوْنَthe universeكُلَّهُallواحِدًاoneمُتَنَاسِبًاharmoniousمُتَنَاسِقًا،and coordinated,مِمَّاwhich impliesيَدُلُّindicatesدَلَالَةًa signظَاهِرَةًapparentعَلَىonأَنَّthatالْمُدَبِّرَthe plannerلَهُfor itواحِدٌ،is one,وَهُوَand He isعَزَّ وَجَلَّ.Exalted and Glorious.
And it is known that we do not observe now the sun rising one day with this and one day with that, or one day it delays because the second prevented it and one day it advances because the first commanded the second to bring it out; so we find this, we find the universe as a whole is harmonious and coordinated, which indicates an apparent sign that the planner for it is one, and He is Exalted and Glorious.
فَبَيَّنَThen He clarifiedاللَّهُAllahسُبْحَانَهُGlory be to Himوَتَعَالَىand exaltedبِدَلِيلٍwith evidenceعَقْلِيٍّrationalأَنَّهُthat it isلَاnotيُمْكِنُpossibleالتَّعَدُّدَ؛to be multiple;إِذْIfلَوْifأَمْكَنَit is possibleالتَّعَدُّدَ؛the multiplicity;لَحَصَلَit would have happenedهَذَا؛this;لَانْفَصَلَit would separateكُلٌّeachواحدٌoneعَنْfromالثَّانِيthe secondوَذَهَبَand wentكُلُّeachإِلَهٍGodبِمَاwith whatخَلَقَ،he created,وَحِينَئِذٍand thenإِمَّاeitherأَنْthatيُعْجِزُone is incapableأَحَدُهُمَاof the twoعَنْofالْآخَرِthe otherوَإِمَّاorأَنْthatيَعْلُوone dominatesأَحَدُهُمَاone of themالْآخَرِ؛the other;فَإِنْIfكَانَit wasالأَوَّلُ؛the first;لَمْdid notيُصْلِحَbefitأَيُّanyواحدٍoneمِنْهُمَاof themلِلْأُلوهِيَّةِfor divinityوَإِنْand ifكَانَit wasالثَّانِي؛the second;فَالْعَالِيthen the high oneهُوَisالإِلَٰهَ،the God,وَحِينَئِذٍand thenيَكُونَisالإِلَٰهُthe Godواحِدًا.one.
Then Allah clarified with rational evidence that the multiplicity cannot happen; if it were possible, this would happen; each would separate from the other and every God would go with what he created, and then either one of the two would be incapable of the other or one would dominate the other; if the first, then none of them would be fit for divinity, and if the second; then the high one is the God, and then there would be one God.
