And if there were nothing in sins and disobedience except that they require their owner to be the opposite of these attributes and prevent him from being characterized by them, it would suffice as a punishment.

فَإِنَّIndeed,ٱلْخَاطِرَةُthe fleeting thoughtتَنْقَلِبُturns intoوَسْوَسَةً،whispering,وَٱلْوَسْوَسَةُand the whisperingتَصِيرُbecomesإرَادَةًan intentionوَٱلْإرَادَةُand the intentionتَقْوَىstrengthens,فَتَصِيرُthen it becomesعَزِيمَةً،a determination,ثُمَّthenتَصِيرُit becomesفِعْلًا،an action,ثُمَّthenتَصِيرُit becomesصِفَةًa characteristicلَازِمَةًfixedوَهَيْئَةًand a permanent stateثَابِتَةًestablishedرَاسِخَةً،deep-rooted,وَحِينََئِذٍand thenيَتَعَذَّرُit becomes impossibleٱلْخُرُوجُto escapeمِنْهَاfrom itكَمَاasيَتَعَذَّرُit becomes impossibleعَلَيْه,for himٱلْخُرُوجُto escapeمِنْfromصِفَاتِهِhis attributesٱلْقَائِمَةِexistingبِهِin him.

Indeed, the fleeting thought turns into whispering, and the whispering becomes an intention, and the intention strengthens, then it becomes a determination, then it becomes an action, then it becomes a fixed characteristic and a permanent state that is deep-rooted. And then it becomes impossible to escape from it as it becomes impossible for him to escape from his existing attributes.

وَٱلْمَقْصُودُAnd the intended meaningأَنَّهُis thatكُلَّمَاwheneverٱشْتَدَّتْintensifiedمُلَابَسَتُهُhis association withٱلذُّنُوبِthe sinsأَخْرَجَتْthey expelمِنَfromٱلْقَلْبِthe heartٱلْغَيْرَةَthe jealousyعَلَىonنَفْسِهِhimselfوَأَهْلِهِand his familyوَعُمُومِand the generalٱلنَّاسِpeople.وَقَدْAnd it mayتَضْعُفُweakenفِيinٱلْقَلْبِthe heartجِدًّاa lotحَتَّىuntilلَاnotيَسْتَقْبِحُhe abhorsبَعْدَafterذَٰلِكَthatٱلْقَبِيحَ،which is ugly,لَاneitherمِنْfromنَفْسِهِhimselfوَلَاnorمِنْfromغَيْرِهِ.others.وَإِذَاAnd ifوَصَلَhe reachesإِلَىtoهَذَاthisٱلْحَدِّpointفَقَدْthen indeedدَخَلَhe has enteredفِيintoبَابِthe door ofٱلْهَلاَكِ.destruction.

And the intended meaning is that whenever his association with sins intensifies, they expel the jealousy from the heart for himself, his family, and the general people. And it may weaken in the heart a lot until he does not abhor after that what is ugly, neither from himself nor from others. And if he reaches this point, then indeed, he has entered the door of destruction.

And many of these people do not limit themselves to not abhorring but they beautify the abominations and oppression for others, embellish it for them and invite them to it, urging them and striving for its achievement. And for this reason, the one who is indifferent to the dishonor of his family is the most wicked of God's creatures and paradise is forbidden upon him, as well as the one who justifies oppression and tyranny for others, and embellishes it. So look at what the little jealousy has brought upon you!

وَهَذَاAnd thisيَدُلُّكَshows youعَلَىthatأَنَّtheأَصْلَfoundationٱلدِّينِ،of religion,ٱلْغَيْرَةُis jealousyوَمَنْand whoeverلَاdoes notغَيْرَةَhave jealousyلَهُfor himلَاnoدِينَreligionلَهُ.for him.فَٱلْغَيْرَةُSo, jealousyتَحْمِيprotectsٱلْقَلْبَ،the heart,فَتَحْمِيso it protectsلَهُhisٱلْجَوَارِحَ،physical limbs,فَتَدْفَعُand drives awayٱلسُّوءَevilوَٱلْفَوَاحِشَ.and abominations.

And this shows you that the foundation of religion is jealousy, and whoever does not have jealousy has no religion for him. So, jealousy protects the heart, so it protects his physical limbs, driving away evil and abominations.
