يَقُولُHe saysسُبْحَانَهُHis gloryلِعِبَادِهِto His servantsأَنَاIأَكْرَمْتُhave honoredأَبَاكُمْyour fatherوَرَفَعْتُand raisedقَدْرَهُ،his,وَفَضَّلْتُهُand preferred himعَلَىoverغَيْرِهِ،others,فَأَمَرْتُso I commandedمَلَائِكَتِيmy angelsكُلَّهُمْall of themأَنْtoيَسْجُدُواprostrateلَهُto himتَكْرِيمًاin honorوَتَشْرِيفًا؛and in reverence;فَأَطَاعُونِي،So they obeyed me,وَأَبِيand my fatherعَدُوِّي، وَعَدُوَّهُmy enemy, and his enemyفَعَصَىso he disobeyedأَمْرِي،my command,وَخَرَجَand turnedعَنْaway fromطَاعَتِي.my obedience.

He says, His glory to His servants: 'I have honored your father and raised his status and preferred him over others. So I commanded all my angels to prostrate to him in honor and in reverence; so they obeyed me, but my father disobeyed me, and his enemy disobeyed me and turned away from my obedience.'

فَكَيْفَSo howيَحْسُنُwould it be goodبِكُمْfor youبَعْدَafterهَذَاthisأَنْtoتَتَّخِذُوهُtake himوَذُرِّيَّتَهُand his offspringأَوْلِيَاءَas alliesمِنْinstead ofدُونِي،me,فَتُطِيعُونَهُand obey himفِيinمَعْصِيَتِي،my disobedience,وَتُوَالُونَهُand support himفِيinخِلَافِoppositionمَرْضَاتِيto my willوَهُمْwhile they areأَعْدَىthe fiercestعَدُوٍّenemyلَكُمْ؟to you?

So how would it be good for you after this to take him and his offspring as allies instead of me, while you would obey him in my disobedience and support him in opposition to my will, while they are the fiercest enemy to you?

فَوَالَيْتُمْSo you allied withعَدُوِّي،my enemy,وَقَدْand indeedأَمَرْتُكُمْI commanded youبِمُعَادَاتِهِ.to oppose him.

So you allied with my enemy, and indeed I commanded you to oppose him.

وَمِمَّنْAnd from whomوَالَىallies withأَعْدَاءَthe enemiesالْمَلِكِof the kingكَانَwasهُوَheوَأَعْدَاؤُهُand his enemiesعِندَهُwith himسَوَاءً،the same;فَإِنَّfor indeedالْمَحَبَّةَthe loveوَالطَّاعَةَand obedienceلَاnotتَتِمُّbe fulfilledإِلَّاexceptبِمُعَادَاةِby opposingأَعْدَاءِthe enemiesالْمُطَاعِof the one obeyedوَمُوَالَاةِand supportingأَوْلِيَائِهِ.his allies.

And from whom allies with the enemies of the king, he and his enemies are the same in his sight; for indeed the love and obedience cannot be fulfilled except by opposing the enemies of the one obeyed and supporting his allies.

وَأَمَّاAnd as forأَنْthatتَوَالُواyou ally withأَعْدَاءَthe enemiesالْمَلِكِof the kingثُمَّthenتَدَّعُواyou claimأَنَّكُمْthat you areمَوَالٍan allyلَهُto himفَهَذَاthisمُحَالٌ.is impossible.

And as for you allying with the enemies of the king and then claiming that you are his ally, this is impossible.

هَذَاThisلَوْIfلَمْnotيَكُنbeعَدُوٌّan enemyالْمَلِكِof the kingعَدُوًّاan enemyلَكُمْ،to you,فَكَيْفَso howإِذَاifكَانَisعَدُوًّاan enemyلَكُمْto youعَلَىin truth,وَالْعَدَاوَةُand the enmityالَّتِيthatبَيْنَكُمْbetween youوَبَيْنَهُand himأَعْظَمُgreaterمِنَthanالْعَدَاوَةِthe enmityالَّتِيthatبَيْنَbetweenالشَّاةِthe sheepوَالذِّئْبِ؟and the wolf?

This, if the king's enemy is not an enemy to you, how could it be if he is an enemy to you in truth, while the enmity between you and him is greater than the enmity between the sheep and the wolf?

فَكَيْفَSo howيَلِيقُbefitsبِالْعَاقِلِthe wiseأَنْtoيُوَالِيally withعَدُوَّهُhis enemyوَعَدُوَّand the enemyوَلِيِّهِof his friendوَمَوْلَاهُand his lordالَّذِيwhoلَاnotمَوْلَىhas any lordلَهُto himسِوَى؟besides him?

So how does it befit the wise to ally with his enemy, the enemy of his friend and his lord, who has no lord but him?

وَنَبَّهَAnd He pointed outسُبْحَانَهُHis gloryعَلَىtoقُبْحِthe uglinessهَذِهِof thisالْمُوَالَاةِalliancesبِقَوْلِهِ:by His saying:﴿( وَهُمْand they areلَكُمْto youأَعْدَاءٌenemies[الْكَهْفِ/[Al-Kahf/ ٥٠]،50],كَمَاjust asنَبَّهَHe pointed outعَلَىtoقُبْحِهَاits uglinessبِقَوْلِهِby His saying:فَفَسَقَ‘So he transgressedعَنْagainstأَمْرِthe command ofرَبِّهِ﴾his Lord.’

And He pointed out to the ugliness of these alliances by His saying: ‘And they are enemies to you.’ [Al-Kahf/ 50], just as He pointed out to its ugliness by His saying: ‘So he transgressed against the command of his Lord.’

فَتَبَيَّنَSo it becomes clearأَنَّthatعَدَاوَتَهُhis enmityلِرَبِّهِto his Lordوَعَدَاوَتَهُand his enmityلَنَاto usكُلٌّeach of themمِنْهُمَاisسَبَبٌa reasonيَدْعُوinvitingإِلَىtoمُعَادَاتِهِ،oppose him,فَمَاso whatهَذِهِis thisالْمُوَالَاةُ؟alliance?وَمَاand whatهَذَاis thisالِاسْتِبْدَالُ؟replacement?بِئْسَWretchedلِلظَّالِمِينَis for the wrongdoersبَدَلًا!instead!

So it becomes clear that his enmity to his Lord and his enmity to us, each is a reason inviting to oppose him, so what is this alliance? And what is this replacement? Wretched is for the wrongdoers instead!
