And the context of the verse indicates that Allah condemned them because they claimed their Islam due to their ignorance and harshness and revealed what was in their hearts while Allah knew of it, for Allah, the Most High, said: "Would you teach Allah your religion? And Allah knows what is in the heavens and what is in the earth) [the Rooms: 16]

For the apparent Islam is known by everyone. And the preposition (by) was included in his statement, "Would you teach Allah by your religion?" because it implies the meaning of "they tell" and "report," as if it is said: Would you inform Him and relate to Him with your religion, and He is aware of what is in the heavens and what is in the earth? And the context of the verse indicates that what they informed about Allah is what was mentioned by Allah regarding them of their saying: (We have believed) for they informed about what was in their hearts.

And it was mentioned by the interpreters that when these two verses were revealed, they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, making oaths that they are believers, and then descended the saying of Allah the Exalted: "(Say: Would you teach Allah your religion?)".

And this indicates that they were truthful at first in their entering into the religion, because it was not renewed for them after the descent of the verse. It was only words they spoke, and He the Exalted said: "And when faith has not entered your hearts.
