وَعَنْAnd aboutمُقَاتِلِ:Maqatil:كَانَتْThey wereمَنَازِلُهُمْtheir homesبَيْنَbetweenمَكَّةَMeccaوَالْمَدِينَةِand MedinaوَكَانُواAnd they wereإِذَاifمَرَّتْpassedبِهِمْby themسَرِيَّةٌa small armyمِنْofسَرَايَاthe expeditionsرَسُولِthe Messengerاللَّهِof Godﷺ(Peace be upon him)قَالُواthey saidآمَنَّاWe have believedلِيَأْمَنُواso they may be safeعَلَىfromدِمَائِهِمtheir bloodوَأَمْوَالِهِم،and their wealth.فَلَمَّاSo whenسَارَhe marchedرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِof GodإِلَىtoالْحُدَيْبِيَةِAl-Hudaybiyahاسْتَنْفَرَهُمْhe called them to armsفَلَمbut they did notيَنْفِرُواjoin him.
And about Maqatil: Their homes were between Mecca and Medina. And they were if a small army from the expeditions of the Messenger of God (Peace be upon him) passed by them, they said, 'We have believed,' so they may be safe from their blood and their wealth. So when the Messenger of God marched to Al-Hudaybiyah, he called them to arms, but they did not join him.
وَقَالَAnd saidمُجَاهِدٌ:Mujahid:نَزَلَتْIt was revealedفِيinأَعْرَابِthe Bedouinsبَنِيof BanuأَسَدٍAsadبْنِbinخُزَيْمَةَKhuzaimah,,وَوَصَفَand he describedغَيْرَهُanotherحَالَهُمْ،condition of them,فَقَالَ:he said:قَدِمُواThey arrivedالْمَدِينَةَin Medinaفِيinسَنَةٍthe yearمُجْدِبَةٍof droughtفَأَظْهَرُواand they showedالإِسْلامَIslamوَلَمand they were notيَكُونُواbelievers,مُؤْمِنِينَ،believers.وَأَفْسَدُواThey corruptedطُرُقَthe roadsالْمَدِينَةِof Medinaبِالْعَذَرَاتِwith filthوَأَغْلَوْاand they inflatedأَسْعَارَهَاits pricesوَكَانُواand they wereيَمُنُّونَboastingعَلَىtoرَسُولِthe Messengerاللَّهِof Godيَقُولُونَ:saying:أَتَيْنَاكَWe came to youبِالْأَثْقَالِwith burdensوَالْعِيَالِ،and families,فَأُنْزِلَتْthen this verse was revealedفِيهِمamong them.هَذِهِThisالْآيَةُ،verse,وَقَدْand indeedقَالَتْsaidقَتَادَةُQatadahفِيonقَوْلِهِ:his saying:﴿[يَمُنُّونَThey are boastingعَلَيْكَto youأَنْthatأَسْلَمُواthey have believed.قُلSayلَاDo notتَمُنُّواboastعَلَىonإِسْلَامَكُمْyour Islam.بَلِButاللَّهُGodيَمُنُّbestowsعَلَيْكُمْupon youأَنْthatهَدَاكُمْHe has guided youلِلْإِيمَانِto the faithإِنifكُنتُمْyou areصَادِقِينَtruthful.
And Mujahid said: It was revealed concerning the Bedouins of Banu Asad bin Khuzaimah, and he described another condition of them, saying: They arrived in Medina in a year of drought and they showed Islam while they were not believers. They corrupted the roads of Medina with filth and inflated its prices. They were boasting to the Messenger of God, saying: We have come to you with burdens and families, then this verse was revealed about them. And indeed Qatadah said about his saying: 'They are boasting to you that they have believed. Say, do not boast on your Islam, but God bestows upon you that He has guided you to the faith if you are truthful.'
قَالَHe saidمُقَاتِلٌMaqatilبِنْbinحَيَّانَ:Hayyan:هُمْThey areأَعْرَابٌthe Bedouinsبَنِيof BanuأَسَدٍAsadبِنِيbinخُزَيْمَةَ:Khuzaimah:قَالُوا:They said:يَاOرَسُولَMessengerاللَّهِof GodأَتَيْنَاكَWe came to youبِغَيْرِwithoutقِتَالٍfightingوَتَرَكْنَاand we leftالْعَشَائِرَthe tribesوَالْأَمْوَالَand the wealth.وَكُلُّAnd everyقَبِيلَةٍtribeمِنَofالْعَرَبِthe Arabsقَاتَلَتْكَfought you tillحَتَّىthey enteredدَخَلُواwith reluctanceكُرْهًاIslam.فَلَنَاSo for usبِذَٰلِكَupon thatعَلَيْكَyou have rights.فَأُنْزِلَSo God revealedاللَّهُGodتَعَالَى:the Most High:﴿[يَمُنُّونَThey are boastingعَلَيْكَto youأَنْthatأَسْلَمُواthey have believed.قُلSayلَاDo notتَمُنُّواboastعَلَىonإِسْلَامَكُمْyour Islam.بَلِButاللَّهُGodيَمُنُّbestowsعَلَيْكُمْupon youأَنْthatهَدَاكُمْHe has guided youلِلْإِيمَانِto the faithإِنifكُنتُمْyou areصَادِقِينَtruthful.
And Maqatil bin Hayyan said: They are the Bedouins of Banu Asad bin Khuzaimah. They said: O Messenger of God, we came to you without fighting and we left the tribes and the wealth. And every tribe of the Arabs fought you until they entered Islam with reluctance. So for us you have rights upon that, so God the Most High revealed: 'They are boasting to you that they have believed. Say, Do not boast on your Islam, but God bestows upon you that He has guided you to the faith if you are truthful.'
