وَفِيAnd inحَدِيثِthe sayingعُبَيْدِof Ubaidبْنِson ofعُمَيْرٍ،Amir,عَنْfromعَمْرٍوAmrبْنِson ofعَبَسَةَAbasaعَنْaboutالنَّبِيِّthe Prophetﷺ:(peace be upon him):أَنَّthatرَجُلًاa manقَالَsaidلِلنَّبِيِّto the Prophetﷺ:(peace be upon him):مَاWhatالإِسْلَامُ؟is Islam?قَالَ:He said:«إِطْعَامَ'Feedingالطَّعَامِ،the food,وَلِينُand gentleالكَلَامِ»speech.'
And in the saying of Ubaid ibn Umayr, from Amr ibn Abasa about the Prophet (peace be upon him): A man said to the Prophet (peace be upon him): 'What is Islam?' He said: 'Feeding the food, and gentle speech.'
قَالَ:He said:فَمَاThen what isالإِيمَانُ؟faith?قَالَHe said:السَّمَاحَةُ'Generosityوَالصَّبْرُ.and patience.'
He said: 'Then what is faith?' He said: 'Generosity and patience.'
فَإِطْعَامُFeedingالطَّعَامِthe foodعَمَلٌis an actظَاهِرٌapparentيَفْعَلُهُwhich a person doesالْإِنْسَانُa humanلِلْمَقَاصِدِfor multiple purposes,مُتَعَدِّدَةٍ،varied,وَكَذَٰلِكَand likewiseلِينُgentlenessالكَلَامِ،in speech,وَأَمَّاAs forالسَّمَاحَةِgenerosityوَالصَّبْرِand patienceفَخُلُقَانِthey are two traitsفِيinالنَّفْسِ،the self,قَالَHe saidتَعَالَى:the Most High:﴿'
Feeding the food is an apparent act that a person does for multiple purposes, and likewise gentleness in speech. As for generosity and patience, they are two traits in the self. He said the Most High:
وَتَوَاصَوْاAnd they enjoinedبِالصَّبْرِone another to be patientوَتَوَاصَوْاand they enjoinedبِالْمَرْحَمَةِ)one another to be merciful,'
'And they enjoined one another to be patient and they enjoined one another to be merciful,'
