وَAndوَجَدَfoundفِرْعَوْنُPharaohمَقَالًاa statement
And Pharaoh found a statement
يَقُولُهُthat he would sayلِجُلَسَائِهِto his companions.
to say to his companions.
قَالَHe saidلِلْمَلَاto the assemblyحَوْلَهُaround him
He said to the assembly around him
إِنَّIndeedهَذَاthisلَسِحْرُis surely magicعَلِيمٌexpert/learned.
'Indeed, this is an expert magician.' (or magic)
وَAndوَافَقَagreedأَهْلُthe people ofالْمَجْلِسِthe council
And the people of the council agreed.
قَالُواThey saidإِنَّIndeedهَذَاthisلَسِحْرُis surely magicمُّبِينٌclear.
They said, 'Indeed, this is clear magic.'
قَالَSaidمُوسَىMusaأَتَقُوْلُوْنَDo you sayلِلْحَقِّto the truth
Musa said, 'Do you say to the truth
لَمَّاwhenجَاءَكُمْit has come to youأَسِحْرُIs it magicهَذَاthis
when it has come to you, 'Is this magic?
وَلَاAnd notيُفْلِحُwill succeedالسُّحِرُوْنَthe magicians.'
And the magicians will not succeed.'
وَAndرَمَىthrewفِرْعَوْنُPharaohمُوسَىat Musa
And Pharaoh threw at Musa
بِسَهْمٍwith an arrowآخَرَanotherفَقَالَso he said
another arrow, and said:
قَالُواThey saidأَجِئْتَنَاHave you come to usلِتَلْفِتَنَاto turn us away
'Have you come to us to turn us away
عَمَّاfrom whatوَجَدْنَاwe foundعَلَيْهِupon itأَبَاءَنَاour fathers
from what we found our fathers upon,
وَتَكُوْنَand that there should beلَكُمَاfor you twoالْكِبْرِيَاءُthe supremacy/greatnessفِيinالْأَرْضِthe land?
and that supremacy in the land should be for you two?
وَمَاAnd notنَحْنُweلَكُمَاto you twoبِمُؤْمِنِينَare believers.'
And we are not believers in you two.'
وَAndأَرَادَwantedفِرْعَوْنُPharaohأَنْtoيُخَوِّفَfrightenالْمَلَأَthe assembly
And Pharaoh wanted to frighten the assembly
مِنْconcerningمُوسَىMusaفِعْلَin the manner ofالْمُلُوكِkingsفَقَالَso he said
concerning Musa, as kings do, so he said:
يُرِيدُHe wantsأَنْtoيُخْرِجَكُمْexpel youمِنْfromأَرْضِكُمْyour land
'He wants to expel you from your land,
فَمَاذَاso whatتَأْمُرُونَdo you command?'
so what do you command?'
أَشَارَSuggestedالْمَلَأُthe assemblyعَلَىtoالْمَلِكِthe kingأَنthat
The assembly suggested to the king that
يَجْمَعَhe should gatherالسَّحَرَةَthe magiciansمِنْfromمَمْلَكَتِهِhis kingdom
he should gather the magicians from his kingdom
وَيَرْمِيَand confront/sendبِهِمْwith themمُوسَىagainst Musa.
and pit them against Musa.
وَAndهَكَذَاthusكَانَit wasنُودِيَannouncedفِيinمَمْلَكَةِthe kingdom ofمِصْرَEgypt:
And thus it was announced in the kingdom of Egypt:
أَلَا!Behold!مَنْWhoeverكَانَisيَعْرِفُknowledgeable inالسِّحْرَmagic
'Behold! Whoever has knowledge of magic,
فَلْيَحْضُرْlet him present himselfإِلَىbeforeالْمَلِكِthe king.'
let him present himself before the king.'
وَAndاجْتَمَعَgatheredالسَّحَرَةُthe magiciansمِنْfromكُلِّeveryنَاحِيَةٍdirection
And the magicians gathered from every direction
مِنْofنَوَاحِيthe directions ofالْمَمْلَكَةِthe kingdomوَكَانَand it wasيَوْمٌa day
of the kingdom, and it was a day
